Restoring Family Links in South Sudan

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.

We help you to look for family members in South Sudan
The South Sudan Red Cross, with the support of the ICRC, helps people in South Sudan and abroad look for family members in South Sudan. Because of logistical concerns, we cannot provide services in all areas of South Sudan.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • the violence in South Kordofan and Blue Nile State starting in June 2011;
  • armed conflict or other situations of violence
  • natural or man-made disasters;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We cannot look for people who have lost contact with family members due to tribal strife after July 2005.
We help you to look for family members in another country
The ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, helps people in South Sudan look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help to restore contacts between family members
The South Sudan Red Cross, with the support of the ICRC, helps people In South Sudan restore and maintain contact with family members through Red Cross messages. This service is provided:
  • for people who want to contact family members in South Sudan or abroad,
  • people detained in South Sudan or abroad; and
  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help to reunite families
The ICRC and the South Sudan Red Cross*, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, help reunite separated children with their families in South Sudan or neighbouring countries if this is possible. In particular, we try to help:
  • unaccompanied or vulnerable minors who have become separated from their families as a result of armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • demobilized children previously associated with armed forces and armed groups;
  • certain other cases of vulnerable persons.
Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.

We provide other services
The ICRC provides attestations of detention for detainees whom it has visited and registered in South Sudan or in other countries and who currently live in South Sudan.

The ICRC forwards official documents for refugees and returnees in areas in South Sudan where no postal or consular services are operating and for South Sudanese detained abroad. However, the ICRC cannot assist in the request for these documents to be issued.
