Restoring Family Links in Nepal

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member

We help you to look for family members in Nepal
The Nepal Red Cross Society or the ICRC helps people look for family members in Nepal.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • the conflict in Nepal from 1996 to 2006 (service provided by the ICRC);
  • other armed conflicts or situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The Nepal Red Cross Society and the ICRC maintain a list of people missing in connection with the conflict in Nepal from 1996 to 2006. It may be consulted at http://familylinks.icrc.org/nepal in English and in Nepali.

We help you to look for family members in another country
The Nepal Red Cross Society or the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, helps people in Nepal look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help to restore contacts between family members
The Nepal Red Cross Society helps people in Nepal restore and maintain contact with family members through Red Cross messages.

This service is provided:
  • when loss of contact is due to armed conflict, other situations of violence, natural or man-made disasters, or migration; or
  • for people in Nepal with family members abroad who are without other means of re-establishing contact;
  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The ICRC and the Nepal Red Cross Society help security detainees in Bhutan restore and maintain contact with their family members in Nepal through family visits.

We help to reunite families
The Nepal Red Cross Society helps reunite people in Nepal with their families in Nepal. In particular, we try to help vulnerable people. Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.

We provide other services
The Nepal Red Cross Society and the ICRC forward official documents with Red Cross messages where postal services are not operating, if this is possible.

The ICRC provides attestations for people detained in connection the conflict in Nepal and visited by the ICRC.

The ICRC provides attestations about people who went missing during the conflict in Nepal if the ICRC has received written information about their death from the authorities.

The ICRC issues travel documents for registered refugees or migrants on request from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Organization for Migration (IOM) or embassies.
