New Zealand Red Cross: Powerful photo exhibition for missing persons and their families

14/03/2016

Almost an entire generation has passed since the wars in former Yugoslavia, but for thousands of families, the struggle and heartache persist. The ongoing anguish of families torn apart by war took centre-stage in Wellington when “Missing Lives”, a photography exhibition by British photojournalist Nick Danziger and travel writer Rory MacLean, opened to the public.
To commemorate the International Day of the Disappeared 2015, the New Zealand Red Cross, with the assistance of the ICRC organized a photographic exhibition entitled "Missing Lives" by award-winning British photojournalist Nick Danziger and acclaimed writer Rory MacLean and a panel discussion “From the Balkans to Bougainville” which explored the impact of armed conflict and war on families of the missing.

"Missing Lives" documents the experiences of 15 families anxious for news of the fate of their loved ones after they disappeared in the Balkans conflict.  The exhibition aims to give a voice to those families who endure the lasting impact of separation decades on.

New Zealand Red Cross Secretary General Tony Paine reminds participants of the traumatic impact of separation, “I encourage people to step into the shoes of people separated from their families, recognise their suffering and be reminded that in war there is no greater loss than the disappearance of those we love.”

To raise awareness of the work of New Zealand Red Cross’ Restoring Family Links program, an art and essay writing competition was also launched for school children. The winners were Secondary School student, Ella McCabe, and Primary School Student, Fletcher O’Hagan.  Their artwork has since been used as the design for two promotional postcards.
