  • Kenya: Reconnecting lives

    The Kenyan Red Cross, in partnership with the ICRC, continues to carry out tracing activities to restore family links at Kakuma refugee camp in northern Kenya. Refugees who live there use a free mobile phone service to contact relatives and keep in touch with them. There are more than 120,000 people from different nationalities living in the camp, which was established in 1992.

  • Iraq: Helping Syrian families get back in touch

    War and harsh living conditions in Syria are driving thousands of families into neighbouring countries for refuge. Around 2,000 people, who previously settled in Al-Qaim camp, are sheltering in Al-Obeidi refugee camp in the Anbar Governorate of western Iraq, just 30 kilometres from the Syrian border. Many refugees have relatives back in Syria or elsewhere. The ICRC is working in partnership with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society and with the UNHCR’s support to help the refugees maintain family contacts.

  • Uganda: The ambiguity of disappearance

    Between 1986 and 2006, some 75,000 people were abducted in northern Uganda. The fate of several thousand remains unknown, with the ICRC estimating that more than 12,000 may still be missing.

  • Chile: voluntarios se capacitan en restablecer el contacto entre familiares

    Conocer la suerte de seres queridos es una de las principales preocupaciones que surgen tras un desastre natural, durante un conflicto armado o en situaciones de migraciones. En los últimos tres años, 60 voluntarios de la Cruz Roja Chilena han sido capacitados y en todo el país se crearon tres centros operativos de la Sociedad Nacional, equipados con material de rápido despliegue, tal como teléfono satelital, computadora portátil y formularios de RCF con la intención de brindar un soporte logístico adecuado para una respuesta rápida en materia de RCF.

  • Liberia/Côte d’Ivoire: Where conflict separates, the Red Cross reunites

    All too often, armed conflict separates families, leaving children alone and far away from home. The case of Lucien (not his real name) is not unusual. During and after a conflict, the ICRC reunites families, restoring hope to those who have suffered the trauma of war.

  • Guatemala: Families bury loved ones missing for 31 years

    Since 2003, the ICRC mission in Guatemala has been helping families to trace their missing loved ones, as well as helping to organize wakes, burials and funeral services for those found dead.

  • Central African Republic: Fourteen former child soldiers reunited with their parents

    On 1 June 2013, fourteen children were finally reunited with their families, some of them after years of separation. The children had all been recruited into armed groups or the armed forces. Before returning home, they spent several months at a demobilization and rehabilitation centre in Bangui, where they were kept busy with games and given business or tailoring training. The aim of these activities was to help the children overcome their traumatic experience and regain as much of a normal life as possible.

  • Bangladesh: Red Crescent with the victims of Savar tragedy

    On 24 April 2013, an eight-storey building collapsed in Savar, an industrial suburb located on the outskirts of the capital, Dhaka. More than 3,000 people were working in factories and shops housed inside the building when it caved in. Volunteers and staff from the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society rushed to the spot and established a mobile first aid camp to assist the wounded.

  • Nepal: families of missing persons attend memorial events

    Six years after Nepal’s internal conflict ended, over 1400 people are still missing. The ICRC Hateymalo programme supports their families by running social and cultural gatherings and building memorials.
