Restoring Family Links in Uganda

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.
We help you to look for family members in Uganda

The Uganda Red Cross Society helps people look for family members in Uganda

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The ICRC helps people who have lost contact with family members in Uganda due to detention and security-related issues.

We help you look for family members in another country

The Uganda Red Cross Society, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and ICRC delegations abroad, helps people in Uganda look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The ICRC helps people in Uganda look for family members who have been detained in another country.

We help restore contact between family members

The Uganda Red Cross Society or the ICRC helps people in Uganda restore and maintain contact with family members through Red Cross messages. This service is provided:

  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available; and
  • when loss of contact is due to detention or to migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The Uganda Red Cross and the ICRC offer a telephone service to enable newly arrived refugees to contact their families quickly and inform them of their safe arrival in Uganda.

We help reunite families

The Uganda Red Cross Society or the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and ICRC delegations abroad and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), help reunite people in Uganda with their families if this is possible. In particular, we try to help:

  • unaccompanied refugee children in Uganda;
  • unaccompanied Ugandan children in neighbouring countries.

Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.

We provide other services

The Uganda Red Cross Society can try to find information for people who are worried about the health and well-being of a close family member with whom they have suddenly lost contact. In particular, we try to help:

  • unaccompanied refugee children in Uganda;
  • other vulnerable people.

The Uganda Red Cross Society forwards official documents for Ugandan nationals and migrants in areas where no postal or consular services are operating.

The ICRC provides attestations of detention for detainees it has visited. This service is provided at the detainee’s request.

The ICRC issues ICRC travel documents for nationals of countries in conflict who cannot obtain official travel documents to enable them to travel to a third country for resettlement or family reunification.

ICRC travel documents are issued exclusively on request and with supporting documents from the UNHCR, the Office of the Prime Minister (Directorate of Refugees), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and embassies or High Commissions.
