We help restore contact between family members
The Swedish Red Cross helps people restore and maintain contact with family members in Sweden through Red Cross messages. This service is provided:
  • when loss of contact is due to armed conflict, other situations of violence, natural or man-made disasters, or migration; and
  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

Family reunification and repatriation

Family reunification

Families separated due to armed conflict, other situations of violence or migration can receive the following support:

  • information on legislation and procedures;
  • legal support;
  • assistance to facilitate family reunification.

Transfer

Financial support and assistance with arrangements to travel to Sweden

Please note that only family members, excluding newly established marriages/relationships, who have already obtained a residence permit to reunite with family members in Sweden are eligible for financial support and assistance with travel arrangements by the Swedish Red Cross.

Repatriation

For rejected asylum seekers and irregular migrants who have not been granted residence permits for Sweden

The Swedish Red Cross provides information regarding legal aspects of the return process and psycho-social support for all those who contact us.

In addition, specific information (such as housing, schooling, jobs, etc.) as well as return counselling can be provided for those returning to Iraq, Kosovo and Serbia, where contacts have been established with sister societies or other agencies.

We provide other services
The Swedish Red Cross can try to find information for persons who are worried about the health and well-being of a close family member with whom they have suddenly lost contact.

If possible, the Swedish Red Cross forwards official documents attached to a Red Cross message for people in other countries where postal services are not functioning.

The Swedish Red Cross and the ICRC issue attestations of detention for former prisoners of war and detainees registered by the ICRC.
