Restoring Family Links in Tanzania

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.
We help you to look for family members in Tanzania

The Tanzania Red Cross Society or the ICRC helps people look for family members in Tanzania.

We try to help you when you have lost contact since 1991 due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help you look for family members in another country

The Tanzania Red Cross Society or the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, helps people in Tanzania look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help restore contact between family members

The Tanzania Red Cross Society or the ICRC helps people in Tanzania restore and maintain contact with family members through Red Cross messages. This service is provided:

  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available; and
  • when loss of contact is due to armed conflict, other situations of violence or migration or in certain cases of detention;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The ICRC provides RCM services for migrants in the prisons in the five regions of Tabora, Kigoma, Kagera, Mwanza and Rukwa.

We help reunite families
The Tanzania Red Cross Society or the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), help reunite people with their families in Tanzania or abroad if this is possible. In particular, we try to help unaccompanied minors and other vulnerable people if this is possible.

Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.
We provide other services
The ICRC provides attestations of detention for detainees at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha. This service is provided at the detainee’s request.

The Tanzania Red Cross Society forwards official documents with Red Cross messages for people living in areas where no postal or consular services are operating, if this is possible.
