Restoring Family Links in Somalia

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.
We help you to look for family members in Somalia
The Somali Red Crescent Society or the ICRC helps people look for family members in Somalia. Because of security concerns, we cannot provide services in all areas of Somalia.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • the ongoing armed conflict in Somaliland from 1987 onwards;
  • the ongoing armed conflict in the rest of Somalia from 1991 onwards;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

As one means of looking for family members, the ICRC, in cooperation with the BBC, reads out the names of missing Somalis on the “Missing Persons” radio programme six times a week. This takes place at the request of their families.

The ICRC in cooperation with the Somali Red Crescent Society maintains a list of people whose names have been broadcast in the "Missing Persons" radio programme during the past six months or for whom tracing requests were opened by the Red Cross / Red Crescent network. It is available at http://familylinks.icrc.org/somalia.

We cannot help you in cases of family disputes.
We help you look for family members in another country
The Somali Red Crescent Society or the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, helps people in Somalia look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

  • when loss of contact is due to an armed conflict, in Somaliland from 1987 onwards or in Somalia from 1991 onwards;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We provide other services
The Somali Red Crescent Society can try to find information for people who are worried about the health and well-being of a close family member with whom they have suddenly lost contact.

The ICRC and the Somali Red Crescent Society can assist in obtaining official documents. Official documents can be enclosed with Red Cross messages for people living within Somalia and abroad when no other means of sending them are available.

The ICRC provides travel documents in response to official requests from embassies, high commissions, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
