Restoring Family Links in Nigeria

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.
We help you to look for family members in Nigeria

The Nigerian Red Cross Society and the ICRC help people look for family members in Nigeria.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help you look for family members in another country

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, together with the ICRC and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, helps people in Nigeria look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:

  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
  • detention;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help restore contact between family members

The Nigerian Red Cross Society and the ICRC help people in Nigeria restore and maintain contact with their family members through Red Cross messages. This service is provided:

  • when loss of contact is due to armed conflict, other situations of violence, natural or man-made disasters, or migration;
  • for detainees outside Nigeria visited by the ICRC; and
  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available;

or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

Family reunification

•    Family reunifications are accepted only for unaccompanied and vulnerable separated children, as well as
      for vulnerable adults on a case-by-case basis;
•    The request for family reunification should be expressly requested by the beneficiary or the family
      member;
•    The ICRC is involved in family reunifications for cases within the country, and cross-border cases.

Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.

We provide other services
The Nigerian Red Cross Society and the ICRC forward official documents for nationals of countries affected by conflict or natural disaster, victims of human trafficking, Nigerian citizens detained abroad and people in areas where no postal or consular services are operating.
