Restoring Family Links in Colombia

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.
We help you to look for family members in Colombia
The Colombian Red Cross or the ICRC helps people look for family members in Colombia.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
  • detention.
The service is provided for close family members only.

Our priority is to look for
  • people allegedly captured, detained or arrested by any party to the conflict and in other situations of violence (civilians and members of armed groups detained by the Colombian security forces and civilians and members of the Colombian armed and security forces held by the armed groups); higher priority is given to cases of captured minors;
  • minors separated from their family by the conflict and other situations of violence (in particular, captured or demobilised minors) or their families;
  • people allegedly missing because of the conflict;
  • other vulnerable people or their families.
We help you look for family members in another country
The Colombian Red Cross or the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, helps people in Colombia look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • armed conflict or other situations of violence;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
  • detention (in particular for Colombian nationals detained in a third country and for members of the US armed forces and their Colombian families – for the transmission of family news);
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

Our priority is to look for:
  • minors separated from their families by the conflict and other situations of violence (in particular, captured or demobilised minors) or their families;
  • vulnerable people;
  • Colombian detainees abroad.
We help restore contact between family members
The Colombian Red Cross or the ICRC helps people in Colombia restore and maintain contact with family members through Red Cross messages. This service is provided:
  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available;
  • when a family member is being held by an armed group;
  • when contact has been lost due to armed conflict, other situations of violence, or natural or man-made disasters;
  • for refugees and asylum seekers;
  • for members of the US armed forces and their Colombian families (for the transmission of family news);
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

We help reunite families
The ICRC helps reunite people with their families in Colombia or abroad if this is possible. In particular, we try to help:
  • minors separated from their family by the conflict or other situations of violence;
  • people (civilians or members of the armed and security forces) held by armed groups, when they are released.
Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.
We provide other services
The ICRC seeks to recover the mortal remains of people who died in the power of armed groups or who are buried in conflict areas inaccessible to State authorities. The remains are recovered with the consent of all parties concerned and handed over to official forensic authorities for identification. They are then handed over to the family.

The ICRC may also facilitate the evacuation to the closest hospital of wounded or sick civilians or members of armed groups.

The ICRC provides attestations of services rendered, in some specific cases:
  • for people formerly held by armed groups and handed over to the ICRC for release;
  • for the relatives of people whose mortal remains were recovered by the ICRC.
