Restoring Family Links in Afghanistan

How the Family Links Network of the Red Cross/ Red Crescent Movement can help you look for a family member, restore contact with a family member or be reunited with a family member.
We help you to look for family members in Afghanistan
The Afghan Red Crescent Society and the ICRC help people look for their family members in Afghanistan.

We try to help you when you have lost contact since June 2002 due to:
  • the ongoing armed conflict;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.
We help you look for family members in another country
The Afghan Red Crescent Society and the ICRC, together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies abroad, help people in Afghanistan look for family members in another country.

We try to help you when you have lost contact due to:
  • the ongoing armed conflict;
  • natural or man-made disasters;
  • migration;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.
We help restore contact between family members
The Afghan Red Crescent Society and the ICRC help people in Afghanistan restore and maintain contact with family members in Afghanistan and abroad through Red Cross messages, tracing requests and allegations of arrest.

This service is provided:
  • for those who have lost contact with close relatives;
  • when other means of communication (telephone lines, postal system, etc.) are disrupted or not available;
  • when loss of contact is due to the ongoing armed conflict, natural or man-made disasters;
or in other situations of humanitarian need, when possible.

The ICRC also helps Afghan and foreign detainees in Afghanistan restore contact with their family members.
We help reunite families
The ICRC helps reunite vulnerable people in Afghanistan or in a foreign country with their families in Afghanistan if this is possible. In particular, we try to help people who are not able to join their family members by their own means.

The ICRC works with other international organizations to help reunite vulnerable people in Afghanistan with their family members abroad.

The ICRC can also assist in the repatriation to Afghanistan of Afghans who were detained abroad and who were visited by the ICRC during their detention.

Any involvement in family reunification depends on authorization from the government authorities.
We provide other services
When people die in circumstances linked to the ongoing conflict, the Afghan Red Crescent Society and the ICRC can assist in the transfer of the mortal remains to the family’s home village in Afghanistan.
